***You probably noticed that these two lists are not the same, even though the active ingredients are identical—this is because when applying for a license from the FDA, it costs millions of dollars per label claim (for example, to have put Ticks onto the cat label claim would have cost Pfizer a few million dollars more!). The d doctors are familiar with the additional “extra label” uses of drugs, please ask them if you have any questions.*****
****Revolution is approved for use in Puppies 6 weeks old and older, and Kittens 8 weeks old and older. The doctors can also use this drug “extra label” in individual animals that we have a direct veterinary relationship with.****
**** Clients purchasing 6 months or more of Canine Revolution are eligible to receive a free Preventic collar.*****

This product can be sold “Over the Counter” and does not require that we have examined the pet during the last 12 months.
**** Even though this product says it prevents mosquitoes it should NEVER be used INSTEAD of heartworm control, just a single mosquito carrying heartworm can end a life.****
**** One of the active ingredients in this product is very bad for cats. In households with cats, they need to be separated from dogs to which Advantix was applied for the first day of application****

**** The best time to “Treat” for fleas is before you see any!!!****
**** During late summer to late fall the number of pets brought in for “skin problems” skyrockets—this is largely due to animals suffering from flea allergy dermatitis****
**** Flea allergies are one of the most common reasons for ear infections, skin infections, anemia, hair loss, and eosionphilic granuloma (a strange manifestation of allergy common in cats).****
*****Fleas can carry diseases such as feline infectious anemia, a disease that can lead to death if left untreated*****

**** Never, never, never apply this product to a bunny! Some of our clients have told us that pet stores tell them this product is safe for bunnies since it is safe for cats, this product can kill bunnies! (P.S. Pet store guy, bunnies are not small cats but thanks for almost killing someone’s pet with your pompous lack of knowledge.) ***
****Initially this product was thought to be effective for up to 6 weeks, however, the effectiveness is much lower after 4 weeks so it should be applied every 4 weeks ****
*****It is important to check with a doctor ANY time you are dispensing flea or heartworm control for exotic pets such as ferrets or bunnies****
**** Depending on the individual animal, the doctor may recommend that some of the flea, tick, or heartworm preventatives be administered more often than it says on the box—if a client has questions please check with a doctor. *****

**** Ticks carry dozens of diseases, virtually all of these diseases have a human and animal equivalent****
**** Most ticks attach themselves to the ears, head or neck of dogs.***
**** An improperly removed tick can lead to infection, and fluids from squashed ticks can transfer diseases to humans*****
Program for Dogs and Cats
This product prevents flea eggs from hatching, the oral form lasts one month.
THIS DRUG CANNOT BE DISPENSED TO PETS THAT WE HAVE NOT EXAMINED DURING THE LAST 12 MONTHS!
**** Besides a liquid form available for cats, there is also an injectable form of this product available for cats that lasts 6 months****

***Interceptor is probably easiest to administer to cats inside of pill pockets.****
***This drug might be a good choice for dogs with chronic Whipworm infestation because the manufacturer guarantees the product against whipworms.***
***Did you ever notice that the dose of interceptor or heartgard for a 12 lb cat is the same as the dose of interceptor for a 100 lb dog? Its because cats are less sensitive to the active ingredients of both interceptor and heartgard.***
Most common reasons Flea, Tick, and Heartworm control medications “Don’t Work”
1.
Owner fails to give or apply the product, usually because they forgot or because they did not buy enough for the entire season.
2.
The animal spits out the product when the owner is not looking.
3.
The owner attempts to give a topical product orally (and boy is their cat/dog MAD at them now).
4.
The owner fails to push the cap down and actually “open” the product, thus none is actually applied to the pet.
5.
The owner doesn’t understand that flea eggs, larvae, and pupa will remain in the environment for 4 to 6 months, therefore a single flea treatment will NEVER, EVER, be enough treatments for a bet that the owner is actually Seeing fleas on (even if its only one).
6.
The owner fails to treat all of the pets in the household.
7.
The owner is bathing the pet in a medicated shampoo several times a week.
8.
The owner gives the product sporadically.
9.
The owner did not reduce the number of eggs in the environment by vacuuming, using room sprays, washing bedding, etc.
10.
The owner got the product on-line or in a pet store and it was a fake product, imported illegally from another country, or expired crap (the FDA is constantly trying to shut down intranet pharmacies selling fake HUMAN drugs—where do you think animal medicines fall on their priority list?)
a.
Did you know that officially, none of the manufactures of the products listed will sell directly to on-line retailers?
b.
Did you know that some intranet companies, such as Pet Med Express/1800petmeds/1888petmeds have undergone multiple name changes?
c.
Did you know that some companies change their name as a way of avoiding legal liability for punishments and reprimands handed out by the FDA?
d.
Did you know that many of the products online come from “redistribution or product diversion” an illegal practice, which involves individuals or companies reselling product without a license. Because they are doing this in secret there is no governmental control. This is another way fake products can enter into the supply chain since the people buying them have no way of verifying authenticity (and often no interest in verifying authenticity).
e.
Did you know that the FDA does not recommend buying medications of any kind from intranet pharmacies?
In very rare instances, it is possible that the fleas and ticks could become resistant to a product. So far, this is not being reported in the literature and is extremely unlikely to be the cause.
Why can we dispense some of these products without seeing the pet, but not others?
It has to do with the government agency approving the product and what disease a product is approved to treat or prevent. EPA labeled products can be sold over the counter, and FDA products, all of which are classified as “drugs,” require an exam be given within the last 12 month. Any product containing heartworm preventative is classified as a “drug” and will therefore be regulated by the FDA.
Being EPA vs. FDA regulated is NOT a reflection of the safety of the product—many of you have seen the grocery store Hartz Mountain flea product associated tremors or death in cats– this was from an EPA not FDA regulated product.
